Chapter Twelve
On the ride to the hospital, Marvin and Judah rode in relative silence. Sure there was loud music pumping through the speakers, but that was nothing unusual. What was different was neither man said a word since they stopped talking about their shoot out with Stacks and his men.
That was what was on Judah’s mind, the shoot out! He had replayed the whole thing over and over in his mind and was not only happy to be alive, but Judah was proud of the way he handled himself.
You didn’t think I could handle it, Pop, but your boy stepped up, Judah thought as he drove. In his mind, he could see the whole thing happening in slow motion.
On three.
Me and Marv stood up and started blastin’. I hit one with two to the chest and ran my ass off. Judah laughed out loud and Marvin looked at him.
For Marvin, the ride to the hospital was about something else. He felt like he had betrayed the family by not telling what he knew about Kurtis Baxter and the drug business that he was running. Marvin couldn’t escape the fact that had he said something to anybody about what he heard; this entire situation could have been avoided. And because of that, Marvin was scared. Scared that he might die for it.
When Marvin and Judah got to the hospital, RJ was still in the waiting area with Pam. RJ stood up when he saw them come in. “Excuse me, Ma. I’ll be right back,” he said and approached Marvin and Judah.
“You hear anything?” Judah asked.
RJ shook his head. “Nothing yet.”
“You hear from Pills?” Judah asked.
“Yeah, he found her. They’re on their way. Y’all find out anything?”
“Yeah,” Judah said and walked away.
Marvin looked at RJ for a while and then he proceeded to tell RJ what he knew about Kurtis Baxter and what he heard Stacks tell TK. RJ listened quietly to what Marvin had to say. He was disappointed, but he told Marvin that he understood. “But I gotta tell Uncle Mike.”
“No,” Marvin said and walked away. “I gotta make this right.”
“Marvin!” RJ shouted. “Where you going?”
Marvin took out his phone. “I need to make a call,” he said as Pills came in with Barbara. She ran past Marvin and went straight to her mother. Even though Pam had been worried about her, and mad that nobody could find her because her phone was off, Pam was just happy that Barbara was there with them now and that she was safe. She held Barbara tight and they started to cry together.
“Where is he, Mommy? Is he okay?” Barbara cried.
“Your father is still in intensive care. I’ll take you back there to see him the next time the nurses allow it.”
“Why can’t I see him now?”
“Your father is resting.” Pam stood up. “But I’ll go check.”
“No, Mommy, I’ll go ask,” RJ said, and he and Barbara went to the nurse’s station and they allowed Barbara a short visit.
“Come on, RJ,” Barbara said.
RJ watched Marvin as he talked on the phone.
